An Important Step- Committee and Governance
We have a committee! Thanks to those who have stepped up to move this project along. The committee members are appointed for two year terms. Some adjustments may be made in order to stagger these terms (example, some committee members may start with a one year term) in order to avoid full committee turnover. Successive terms may occur based on the success, participation, and level of commitment of the individual committee member and is subject to Committee and Board approval. Term renewal is not automatic.
The guiding principles of the committee are as follows:
● Community-driven agricultural development.
● Collaboration with Athabasca District Agricultural Society governance and facilities.
● Transparency and accountability.
● Balanced operational autonomy within approved budgets.
● Respectful, consensus-based decision-making.
Committee decisions will be made using a consensus model, facilitated by the Fist to Five method. This is a method where each committee member can show their level of support (or non support) for a motion using the number of fingers held up on one hand.
Fist to Five Scale
5 = Full support; will actively champion the decision
4 = Support with minor concerns
3 = Can accept the decision
2 = Significant concerns that must be addressed where possible
1 = Strong objection requiring revision
0 = Block due to legal, safety, financial, or mission-critical concern
This video also explains the method in simple terms and is 34 seconds long.

You (yes, you!) can get involved with a subcommittee!
Subcommittees will focus on specific aspects of moving this initiative forward, and can include goals ranging from event planning to the actual growing of beautiful local veg! Contact info@athabascagrown.ca if you want more info about joining a subcommittee. Volunteers are like zucchini, you can never have too many.
