Athabasca Grown: Exploration of a Winter Greenhouse & the Local Food System
Athabasca Grown is a community-driven initiative rooted in civic agriculture focused on strengthening local food systems and the local economy. The project brought together residents, organizations, and researchers to explore practical, values-driven solutions, starting with the feasibility of a community deep winter greenhouse.
The results of a year of community engagement, expert consultations, and asking “who, what, why, where and how” have yielded a community co-designed blueprint for a “deep winter” passive solar greenhouse. The report describes a greenhouse’s relationship to, and enhancement of, the local food system in Athabasca and the region.
The report also discusses social ROI and outlines the next steps to bring this exciting, resilience-building technology to the community.
